Tricks & Treats

In here there be monsters.
There be slimy, slithering eels.
All the girls are running faster,
spooky boogey man is on their heels.

Jack O'Lantern is out searching.
The gords and turnips are all lit.
Mixed souls and spirits turning,
to spells that have been writ.

In here there is true wonder.
There is a spectacle to be seen.
Black boxes filled with tricks or treats,
carried by children's gleam.

A veil between two worlds.
We are neither here nor there.
We are spirits in truth eternal.
We are watchers. We are aware.

In here there be mystic portals.
Spiraling circles filled with light.
Ghosts and goblins, tricks and treats.
Under the moon so bright.

So hallowed is this night of relish,
in which all creatures delight.
Spark the candles, speak the words.
May you find your treats tonight.

a wannabe yogi-

In Yoga, I learned a number of things that had several tangible meanings and metaphors for life.

First- yoga means:   Union.

Some conjecture that it is the union of body, mind, and spirit.
The union of breath and movement.
The joining of every facet of what we are combined with the faith in what we can become.

Most importantly, upon learning the very definition of yoga, I was taught that all practitioners most devote to this exercise and this active meditation daily.

Yoga is ninety percent practice, and ten percent method.

What's all the babble about yoga?

Honestly, I don't know.
You wouldn't catch me doing downward dog, or a bakasana anytime in the past few months. I have fully moved away from the teachings and practice, and become a slovenly boring American.
However, the mindset and the concentration that can be applied to my life has stayed with me.

After all it is my belief that we are intended to understand the "union" of all that we are and everything around us.

Take for example:  Your relationship with your shoes.

Silly really. I know. Just hear me out..

We spend so much time walking, running, sometimes leaping through life. Tripping over our own problems, whether they are physical, or just all in our heads.

Do we ever truly focus on our feet? What we put them through? The things that we put ON them?

The biggest relationship I used to have with my shoes had to have been; oh crap, I seem to have a blister.

Some humans rely on comfort.
Some rely on the presence of style.
We base our foot attire on names.
We purchase them because of what magazines say.

So really, our relationship to our shoes a good portion of the time is based on our wants and desires, and not really sustaining the comfort and healthy continuation of our feet. The rudder to our ever-living and breathing machine we call our bodies. As dramatic as that might sound-- Several nerve fibers, blood vessels, and bones are intricately laid out in the very foundation of what keeps our body upright. So shouldn't we have a keen and knowledgeable idea as to what types of shoes we wear?

What type of union are we expressing to our whole selves when we wear torture devices around our little piggies?

Ten percent of this issues lies in the details, and ninety percent is in the practice of day to day life...

If we take the comparison of shoes out of the equation, and we just say that life is finding a union between everything around us. Life is acknowledging and finding a direct NEED to sustain what we are as a whole.

Life is yoga.

Breath.

Movement.

Meditation.

Finding answers within ourselves, and not other people.

Not our fancy cars.

Designer footwear...

Skyscraper

Demi Lovato went public about her battle with eating disorders and had to check into rehab..

While my own personal struggle with eating disorders never went that far, I do feel that it is necessary to say that if you feel like you need to change who you are to be accepted... GET HELP. Talk to someone.
You should only change your diet and your body image if it is unhealthy for you to be where you are currently. We come in all shapes and sizes. Not everyone can be a size ZERO. Not everyone can have a perfect complexion.

Don't lose yourself in the hype of being perfect.

You are perfect, because you are not like anyone else on this planet.

A Whale of a Tale--

Once upon a time... when I was in the fifth grade...

A marine biologist we will call 'Mr.Blue' came to my elementary school and held an assembly to learn about the amazing variety of whales in the vast oceans. Being the geeky factoid magnet that I was then- I was immediately captivated by the thought of this. I remember sitting eagerly in the middle, front row of the gymnasium and listening intently to Mr.Blue recount work he did in the gulf. Retelling tales of scuba-diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Recording the sounds of grey whales during their mating and migratory periods.

Sitting here typing about it makes me smile. To be that kid again. A sponge-like, knowledge absorbing machine!

Then again, the memory is a bit short-lived when I say it makes me smile..

There came a portion in the assembly where students were selected to help with a demonstration about different types of whales. So yes, you can imagine I raised my hand and ran to the front of my peers when I was told I could be of service at the time. Mr.Blue began to take some large poster-boards with an image of a whale on each, and a description of what characteristics they have. I watched as we stood single file, facing the audience and Mr.Blue handed each of us our posters.

We were told not to look at them until he pointed to us and told us to turn them over. So- I complied with this request, not knowing the inevitable mockery I would become for the rest of the school year. Lindsay was the first girl in line, and she had the poster of a grey whale. She was rather beige for a young girl in the first place. Always eating peanut butter and jelly, and sitting by herself. Maybe her family was on the brink of extinction, or they were peanut butter and jelly vampires...

From what I can remember, the grey whale is hard to follow, and the species itself was almost extinct, but somehow they came back in great numbers. Baby grey whales also have dimples! Just like me! Ha. Moving on to Justin, he had a poster of the killer whale- which totally suited Justin. He had issues. One time at recess I saw him grabbing large carpenter ants, and smearing them on his face like he was Rambo: First Blood. Creepy.

Beluga's, humpback's, and blue whales were featured in this commentary. Most of which I had read about in my subscriptions to National Geographic.

There were several students ahead of me, and by the by I kept my curiosity of what was on MY poster to myself. When Mr.Blue reached me, he pointed to me and said,"Last but not least" then he made a gesture for me to turn over my poster and said,"The SPERM WHALE." If I could take a moment in time where there was a dramatic pause that didn't skip a beat, record it, and show it to you, THIS moment was it. Fifth grade students have a sick sense of humor, and I immediately knew the second I heard the words,"Sperm Whale" that I would then be the object of ridicule. I stared blankly ahead, and slowly lifted the poster to cover my face...

The sperm whale is the deepest diving mammal in the oceans. It has an extensive diet of large squid and fish. Sperm whales will care for their young for over a decade, and can live up to 70 or 80 years! All of these facts were fantastic, aside from my bright red face, hidden behind the poster and the ringing in my ears that distracted me from truly appreciating what I was being told.

The silence concluded with Mr.Blue continuing to talk about the sperm whale, and the background symphony to that was immediate laughter. Fingers being pointed not only at my poster, but at ME as though I was a giant, bulbous blob of fleshy, aquatic life, floating in front of them. Suspended in time. What was probably not even sixty seconds of time, turned into hours of my life chipping away internally. I felt like I was going to cry and piss myself all at the same time while I saw the sheepish grins of my peers belittling me.

Thanks to Mr.Blue, and my eagerness as a child to be a part of the adult world- trying to educate everyone. I turned myself into the sperm whale. For the rest of the week, all of the kids that participated in the demonstration snickered and made penis jokes. I can guarantee you that none of them genuinely knew what they were poking fun at. In fact,  2/3rds of my class probably WERE the product of a broken prophylactic in the backseat of some heavy petting session that their parents had way too soon in life. People like Lindsay and Justin- concluding that they were better than ME, because the whales that they were randomly selected for didn't have a genital reference...Er...Reproductive..

When I think of this story- I think of where I am in my life now.
Sitting at this desk, writing about the cruelty of my peers. The harsh realities of how people misinterpret words and the meanings of things that are supposed to educate them. Not only does this reflect on the ignorance and immaturity of my generation, but it truly shows how sad and unappreciative we can be to the world around us. I recently went back to Detroit with a lifelong friend of mine, and we drove through the town we used to live in on my way back to Ohio.

I felt sick to my stomach at the idea of a chance meeting with someone from high school. There are so many horror stories and bad memories from my childhood and teenage years that are all centered around my struggles in school. I never really found my place amidst the backstabbing and the cliques that only gravitated around popularity, fashion, and pubescent mind control.

The fifth grade taught me a lot about where I would go as an adult.

I would be the first to jump in line and demonstrate new ideas.
However, I would be judged...

People never make changes or make an impact without being judged.

People will always talk about you, so you might as well give them something to talk about. Right?

What does nature tell us?

Whales are known to teach, learn, cooperate, scheme, and even grieve...

There are times when I look at the world, and I see my younger siblings interact with people in their environment. I sincerely hope that they do not become the boy that I was, hiding behind the poster, ignoring the facts, because other people wanted to poke fun at it. I hope that they do not become distracted by the social norms that seem to subdue so many intelligent youth. I hope that I continue, even now to break away from hiding behind fear and I constantly educate and empower myself so I can take charge of my life.

So, aside from this fairy-tale nightmare, that only reflects on the outer layer of who I am today--

The moral of the story can be summed up to this line:

Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.
Gilbert K. Chesterton

Now get back to work!

Don't be a negaholic-

Sometimes you get thrown out of the mix and you feel responsible for
having to play that game where everyone wants you to catch up and be a
part of some 'inner circle' of gossip and the latest fads. Why do you
bother?

Sometimes getting even, means getting thrown back through the roughest
parts of your life, and experiencing them all over again, just because
you're THAT pissed off at someone. Is it worth it?

Sometimes love can be a burden. It can drag you down, even if you go
kicking and screaming. It's worth it. Have you experienced it yet?

Sometimes getting a phone call at three in the morning can be the most
inspirational moment of your life. Even though you were dead asleep,
and you dreaded answering the phone. Someone close to you needed to
talk, and it made you realize that you were important enough to them
that they assumed you would listen. Were they right?

Sometimes the scars hurt more than the wounds ever could.- Feel it.

Sometimes free-falling is the only correct choice.- Dive.

Sometimes the most irrational explanation can be appreciated because
it took thought and tact.- Savor it.

Sometimes the chance to look back and reminisce about your life and
all of its consistent inconsistencies can be more valuable than never
waking up tomorrow. Open your eyes.

Sometimes we pollute ourselves, and poison the ones we love with hate,
malice, and greed...Only to find that we're condoning the inevitable.
A life of loneliness. A life of what 'could have' or 'should have'
been. Misery enjoys company, but once in a while it finds a window to
crawl out of late at night while you're sleeping, and it feeds you the
illusion of it NEVER existing. I promise.

Sometimes, you never realize that you only have one chance to prove
yourself in life. Whether you believe it or not. The reality is -
you're fucked. Can you accept that? All hypocrites have the most
fanciful dreams and hopes for themselves. The key word...SELF.
Selfish. - sorry, you aren't going to win the lottery. No-one is going
to give you $2 million dollars in cash because you lost someone you
loved and you have that pathetic look on your face. Manifest destiny.

Sometimes money makes the world go round, until it catches on fire,
and we have nothing to sell but ourselves. - Too late. It's already
happened. You'd better run while the time clock is turning. Look busy.
Look important. Yeah, that's it. You're number 1.

Sometimes we say things we don't mean, and mean things we could never
put into words. Maybe you shouldn't talk at all?
Sometimes hoping to get your point across is all you have to live for.
Just like being the "yes" man of every group. Just like shining your
shoes, because you think that someone might notice your chapped lips.
Just like running a marathon with a cigarette in one hand, and a
martini in the other. Like singing a song in a language you don't understand.

Sometimes being a product of your environment, means finding a new one
to grow and evolve into... Even if you desire not to.

Sometimes....

There's all of this love being poured out, but it's just spilling onto
the floor. It's like bright red paint, and you're all watching me make
a mess of the new white carpet. The drinks shake. The guests run out,
and the host drops his mouth open as my poor little heart is emptied
in an "oh no" expression.

Sometimes, I feel like the spectacle of a nightmare.

Sometimes, I just want to wake up.

Sometimes...

I just don't know anymore.
